Private Yoga Sessions: Yoga as Therapy
What is a private yoga session or Yoga as Therapy mean?
- collaboration between the teacher and the student to develop a practice(s) specifically related to an individual’s needs and goals.
- useful in identifying strategies for yoga practice and making personal adaptations that are not addressed in a group class environment.
- ideal for developing a personal practice and/or to address specific health concerns, injuries and goals.
- beneficial to yoga practitioners on many levels and for many personal reasons.
Why develop a personal home yoga practice?
Students frequently want to practice more often than group classes allow. Practicing at home or when you travel is a time and cost effective supplement to group classes. During the session we review your personal goals, how to adapt yoga postures and breathing techniques for your body, and strategize on how and when to make your practice consistent. After each session the written practice plan is updated. You are then guided through the practice before you leave so that you are familiar and feel comfortable with how to practice safely and effectively.
What if I have a special circumstance or an injury?
Some people have needs that are, simply put, not addressed in a group class. Susan works one-on-one with students who have a variety of special circumstances. A few examples of conditions addressed in private sessions: prenatal, postpartum, asthma, depression, stress management, Fibromyalgia, arthritis, and coping/managing cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery. Susan has personal experience with and works with individuals with neck, back and other acute and chronic physical injuries.
What do personal practices achieve?
Personal practices are designed and sequenced to:
- respect individuals
- practice safely
- minimize risk
- further personal goals
- calm and focus the mind
- positively affect energy
- manage stress
- develop postural alignment
- affect therapeutic change
Where are you located?
Private classes can take place in the Viniyoga Journey studio located
at 59 McBride Street, Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts or
Community Health Institute, Winchester Hospital, 12 Alfred Street, Woburn, Mass. or Healthworks Fitness Center.
How many times do we meet?
The number of sessions will vary depending on the level of experience and the
goal(s) of a student. A phone or e-mail conversation takes place to determine if this approach and my style is suitable and appropriate for you. Examples of ways to continue sessions are: twice a week for two weeks or once a week for one month or once a week or once a month for as long as there is a need. It depends on your situation and sessions are adjusted to meet personal objectives. You are expected to practice yoga on your own to achieve results.
