Yoga as Therapy, Healing and PreventionWhat is Yoga Therapy?Yoga Therapy meets a person where they are and adapts yoga to meet the needs of the person. It takes into account many factors such as age, health history, range of motion, abilities, strengths, energy level, and personal goals. Yoga Therapy incorporates some or all of the following: āsana (postures/movement), prāņāyāma (breathing techniques), chanting (Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras or words of your choice such as a prayer or poem that speak to your heart/mind), meditation, relaxation, and ritual (such as lighting a candle). Yoga Therapists adapt and apply yogic principles and practices for structural conditions, chronic disease and emotional health. Yoga Therapists require specialized training. In addition to 500-hours of study to become a Yoga Teacher, additional study is required for Yoga Therapy certification. I was awarded a Yoga Teacher and Yoga Therapist certification from the American Viniyoga Institute, www.viniyoga.com. Prior to training in Viniyoga I was awarded a Level III 500-hours certification in the Pathways Yoga Systems, Exeter, Mass. www.arhumyoga.com See Also: |
